There are 2 types of detox pills, one is about cleansing the body of toxins, whilst the other one is about cleaning the body out to pass a drug test. This research topic is for general cleansing and the supplements and pills that people use.

Detox pills are available in many health food stores and pharmacies, but there is a gigantic variety of them so what works? Many are proprietary blends.

You can’t detox your body. It’s a myth. So how do you get healthy? | Life and style | The Guardian

There’s no such thing as ‘detoxing’. In medical terms, it’s a nonsense. Diet and exercise is the only way to get healthy. But which of the latest fad regimes can really make a difference? We look at the facts

Ingredients to Look For in Supplements

Gluthathion

Glutathione is a popular anti-oxidant that provides the substantial anti-oxidant protection according to research (5).  Every cell in the body produces glutathione.  A lot of longevity science point to glutathione being important to show how healthy we are.  (6,78).

It is the body's master switch for antioxidants, many other supplements affect gluthathion levels indirectly.

Glutathione is useful for detox at the cellular level, for shielding genetic material against free radicals.

Since glutathione is broken down quickly when ingested orally, there are couple of forms it comes in which is absorbable and will get into the blood. They are

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) - Precursor to the major anti-oxidant glutathione. Recommended dosage 400-1200 mg daily.

Liposomal Glutathione - Glutathione combined with liposomes. 200-500mg taken 1 to 2 times daily without food

Acetylated Glutathione - Similiar to above, it passes through the intestines and diffuses into the bloodstream. Recommended dosage 200-500mg 1-2 times daily without food.

The acetylated form is generally the most superior for absorption.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Another powerful anti-oxidant works by upregulating glutathione levels indirectly. Lipoic acid protects mitochondria (R). There is also research that shows it helps to balance the immune system. and insulin sensitivity leading to optimized blood sugar. (RR)

Recommended Dosage 400to 800mg of R-Alpha Lipoic Acid

Milk Thistle

Very famous for liver detoxification and a must have in my opinion for any detox plan. Silymarin is the main active ingredient in Milk Thistle. Research shows  that Milk thistles boosts) both Gluthathione and Superoxide Dismutase (R)

Protects intestines from damage by increasing glutathione levels by 50% (R)

Detox Pills - Hard to Target Toxins

The problem with detox pills is we don't know what exactly to target, detoxing completely is a myth, so we are mainly looking to increase the function of the body's own ability in detoxing, add colon cleanse, anti-oxidants and etc and we end up with a thorough purge of harmful chemicals from the body.

It seems like a lot of expensive detox programs has more to do with the diet eliminating things rather than a specific chemical detoxing. Though there is a lot of research that certain chemicals can speed up the natural process of toxin removal the body does all the time.

Some crazy toxins found in people's blood or urine according a National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals :

  • Acrylamide (formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures, and as a byproduct of cigarette smoke)
  • Arsenic, found in many home-building products
  • Environmental phenols, including bisphenol A (found in plastics, food packaging and epoxy resins) and triclosan (used as an antibacterial agent in personal care products such as toothpaste and hand soap)
  • Perchlorate, used in airplane fuel, explosives and fireworks
  • Perfluorinated chemicals, used to create non-stick cookware
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, used in fire retardants found in consumer products such as mattresses
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), found in paints, air fresheners, cleaning products, cosmetics, upholstery fabrics, carpets, dry-cleaned clothing, wood preservatives, and paint strippers

The liver does most of the work when it comes to detoxification, it uses a two phase process to break down chemicals and toxins. During phase 1, toxins are neutralized and broken into smaller fragments, afterwards in phase 2 they are combined with other molecules creating new non-toxic molecules that can be excreted in your bile, urine or stool. Pretty amazing isn't it?
