Thereâs no such thing as âdetoxingâ. In medical terms, itâs a nonsense. Diet and exercise is the only way to get healthy. But which of the latest fad regimes can really make a difference? We look at the facts
Ingredients to Look For in Supplements
Glutathione is a popular anti-oxidant that provides the substantial anti-oxidant protection according to research (5). Every cell in the body produces glutathione. A lot of longevity science point to glutathione being important to show how healthy we are. (6,7, 8).
It is the body's master switch for antioxidants, many other supplements affect gluthathion levels indirectly.
Glutathione is useful for detox at the cellular level, for shielding genetic material against free radicals.
Since glutathione is broken down quickly when ingested orally, there are couple of forms it comes in which is absorbable and will get into the blood. They are
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) - Precursor to the major anti-oxidant glutathione. Recommended dosage 400-1200 mg daily.
Liposomal Glutathione - Glutathione combined with liposomes. 200-500mg taken 1 to 2 times daily without food
Acetylated Glutathione - Similiar to above, it passes through the intestines and diffuses into the bloodstream. Recommended dosage 200-500mg 1-2 times daily without food.
The acetylated form is generally the most superior for absorption.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Another powerful anti-oxidant works by upregulating glutathione levels indirectly. Lipoic acid protects mitochondria (R). There is also research that shows it helps to balance the immune system. and insulin sensitivity leading to optimized blood sugar. (R, R)
Recommended Dosage 400to 800mg of R-Alpha Lipoic Acid
Very famous for liver detoxification and a must have in my opinion for any detox plan. Silymarin is the main active ingredient in Milk Thistle. Research shows that Milk thistles boosts) both Gluthathione and Superoxide Dismutase (R).
Protects intestines from damage by increasing glutathione levels by 50% (R)
